APIC Energy Hackathon 2022 — Winners

Nastaran Gholizadeh, Chloe Zhou, Vadim Avkhimenia and Amirhossein Sohrabbeig, students from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Alberta, won the APIC Energy Hackathon for their “smart electric vehicle charging” idea that they brainstormed and developed as a team.

They proposed plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs)—all-electric/battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids—and discussed the rapid growth in EV adoption driven by government subsidies, increased range, lower battery costs, and environmental sensitivity. Light-duty plug-in electric vehicle market penetration, annual sales, and market share.

They were part of a group of 27 graduate and undergraduate students scattered across multiple time zones, determined to present an innovative idea and solution to the judges and hosts at this event. Over the weekend of May 6–8, seven final teams worked overnight on their ideas, using Zoom and Discord as their only means of communication.

This event was hosted with the help and support of AI4Society, ISAIC, Future Energy Systems, and the Energy Systems Signature Area at the University of Alberta.
